Background

ARES originated in Long Island City, NY on September, 1979. The company was started by Bob Filippidis, an émigré from Greece in 1963 and an exceptionally knowledgeable & competent Printing Pressman, along with his wife, Mary Filippidis, a Queens College graduate trained in all phases of operations.

Their small printing operation quickly became a success and within two years it was apparent that additional space would be required. In 1981, Bob & Mary moved ARES to its current home in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. ARES was one of the first tenants of the then relatively new enterprise of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Commission, which encouraged economic growth and employment in the area.

Bob & Mary’s younger son Jerry, a graduate of RIT’s School of Imaging & Photographic Sciences, joined ARES in 1992 assuming the responsibilities of Operations Management. During his time as a student and after graduation, Jerry held a responsible position in Quality Assurance with the major commercial printer Case Hoyt. This background exposed him to most phases of the industry. The education and experience he brought to ARES resulted in the introduction of advanced procedures and techniques to the firm. Jerry is currently Vice President of Operations.

In 1993, Bob & Mary’s older son George, also a graduate of RIT., joined ARES assuming the responsibilities for Marketing and Sales. George brought with him his technical education along with the 5 years of Technical Marketing Management experience he gained working for the USA counterpart of Mitsubishi Paper Mills Ltd. His efforts greatly improved sales volume, business administration techniques and management processes. As a direct result, ARES’ image in the marketplace has been enhanced greatly. George is currently Vice President of Marketing & Sales.

ARES now offers complete manufacturing capabilities from the two largest Printing Presses in NY State. In addition to our Combining Machines, Sheet Litho-Laminating Machines, Die Cutters, Cutting and Creasing Presses, a number of Folding/Gluing Machines, Window Machines plus Hot Leaf Stamping and Embossing Machines; ARES also houses a completely equipped Prepress & Graphics Department for processing artwork, film and plates & a complete CAD/CAM sample making department. ARES is one of only three companies on the East Coast with “in house” Single Face Combiners including Sheet Laminators for manufacturing E-Flute and B-Flute. We are the only company in New York State with this capacity.

“GREEN before going GREEN was trendy”; ARES has made Sustainability a core component of their business approach. ARES has always placed an emphasis on water based coatings & finishes and has been a strong advocate for using recyclable materials. In 1995, ARES eliminated alcohol and solvents and began using soy based inks. Our factory runs on 100% Co-Generated Power and our location in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, (which meets the City, State and Federal goals for energy efficiency), affords our team to get to work via foot, bicycle, mass transit or car pool.

ARES has been in business for over 30 years and is poised for continued growth and success. As we grow, we look forward to continually offering our clients high quality, creative, innovative & eco-friendly packaging solutions with competitive pricing and quick turnaround times.
